5 Signs Your Furnace Is Starting To Go

1. Strange Noises

Unfamiliar or strange noises that suddenly appear are one of the most obvious and earliest signs that your furnace may be experiencing problems.

These noises can include banging, rattling, screeching, or grinding sounds which may indicate some of the following issues:

  • Complications with internal components, such as loose or worn-out parts
  • Malfunctioning blower motor
  • Problems with the ignition system

2. Higher Energy Bills

A sudden and unexpected increase in energy bills without increasing usage can be a red flag for your furnace. As furnaces age or develop issues, they may require more energy to generate the same heat, leading to higher heating costs.

Monitoring your energy bills regularly and comparing them to previous months or years can help you detect any significant spikes. Addressing efficiency issues early can save you money on utility bills and prolong your furnace’s lifespan.

3. Uneven Heating

Another noticeable sign of possible furnace troubles is experiencing uneven temperatures throughout the home. Some rooms may feel colder or excessively hot after a heat cycle, which can result from issues such as:

  • clogged air filters
  • ductwork problems
  • malfunctioning thermostat

If you notice significant temperature variations or cold spots in different areas of your home, it’s time to have a professional inspect the furnace to identify the root cause and restore comfort levels.

4. Blowing Cold Air

A furnace blowing cold rather than warm air shows its decline. This issue can stem from several factors, including a faulty thermostat, a problem with the pilot light or ignition system, or a malfunctioning heat exchanger.

Continued operation of a furnace blowing cold air compromises comfort, puts strain on the system and can lead to further damage. It’s crucial to address this issue promptly to avoid completely breaking down your heating system.

5. Improper Cycling

Proper cycling refers to the furnace turning on, reaching the desired temperature, and turning off to keep the home comfortable. However, if your furnace exhibits frequent cycling, turning on and off rapidly or running for extended periods without reaching the set temperature, it indicates a potential problem.

Improper cycling can result from issues such as a malfunctioning thermostat, a dirty or clogged air filter, or airflow restrictions within the system. Not only does improper cycling lead to energy wastage and higher utility bills, but it also significantly strains the furnace.

Watching out for these five signs will help you maintain a healthy and economical furnace. When furnaces begin to go, they can snowball into larger issues while majorly disrupting the comfort of your home. It’s time to contact a qualified HVAC if these signs appear or you experience other unusual behaviors. Additionally, if your furnace begins to show one or more of these signs, it may be time to consider looking for a furnace replacement.
