Is Your AC Making Noise? Here’s Why

Noisy air conditioners can be the bane of anyone’s existence. They’re obnoxious, they can be uncomfortable, and they can also bring about the dread of knowing you’ve got an AC repair need. All of these aspects drive homeowners to ignore them sometimes. While we understand where you’re coming from when you opt to ignore a noisy air conditioner—we’re here to tell you that it’s a bad idea.

Ignoring anything is usually a bad idea. Do you ignore a screaming baby or a car engine that’s seizing? Most people would probably say no. While ignorance is bliss, it’s usually a problem down the road that makes life harder than it should be. So, stop ignoring the noises your air conditioner makes. Call us for air conditioning repair in Milton, ON.

Let’s get into some of these noises and what they mean individually.

Call Us for Repairs

No matter what the noise is—if it makes you uncomfortable or is louder than just a gentle “whoosh” of air coming from your vents, then call us. We can get to the root of the problem and fix it quickly.

Rattling and Clanging

When a screw or some other small component falls loose, it’s going to rattle around the inside of your air conditioner. This might not be a major problem in the beginning, since one loose screw won’t really do much damage.

However, that small rattling part can knock into something it shouldn’t and cause more damage down the line. Clanging is the sound of something larger that’s been knocked out of place and is banging against another component. Basically, rattling and clanging should be addressed as early as possible because they’ll only get worse over time as components start to bump into one another.

Bubbling and Hissing

These sounds are notoriously common in air conditioners and they signal one definite problem, a refrigerant leak. The bubbling noise can be air bubbles getting into your refrigerant line and the hissing is a typical signifier that the gaseous refrigerant is leaking out. Regardless of which noise you hear, get this problem fixed as soon as possible. Refrigerant leaks can contribute to lower cooling output, higher energy bills, and an eventual breakdown.

Clicking

Your air conditioner is supposed to click twice—once when it turns on and once when it turns off. If it’s constantly clicking, then there’s something wrong with the electrical system in charge of switching it on and off. Count the clicking noises and call us if they extend past a comfortable amount.

Squealing

Just like your car, there are rubber belts that exist within your air conditioner’s blower motor. Those belts can start to fray and fall apart over time. This isn’t necessarily that bad of an issue to fix. A professional technician can easily replace this kind of belt. However, if the belt breaks while your AC is running, you could run into many more problems that need fixing. Call us to have the belt replaced quickly.

Buzzing

Have you ever plugged in a device and had it buzz obnoxiously? Buzzing is a clue that something isn’t working within the electrical circuitry of your air conditioner. If it’s buzzing, don’t even think about trying to pry the panel open and fix it yourself. Call us to get to the bottom of the problem.
